Airline passenger who made threat killed

Well now...I guess the idiot should have taken his medication, eh? In this day and age, we can ill afford to take any chances. Kudos to the fed air marshal.

Your thoughts? Inquirer.com JOHN PAIN Associated Press MIAMI - A passenger who claimed to have a bomb in a carry-on bag was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday on a jetway to an American Airlines plane that had arrived from Colombia, officials said. Authorities did not immediately say whether any bomb was found. Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said the dead man was a 44-year-old U.S. citizen. It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at anyone, he said. According to a witness, the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757 and his wife explained that he was mentally ill and had not taken his medication. The passenger indicated there was a bomb in his bag and was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said. The marshals went after him and ordered him to get on the ground, but he did not comply and was shot when he apparently reached into the bag, Doyle said. Afterward, investigators put all the baggage on the tarmac and let bomb-sniffing dogs examine it in an effort to establish whether there were explosives aboard. Passenger Mary Gardner told WTVJ-TV in Miami that the man ran down the aisle from the rear of the plane. "He was frantic, his arms flailing in the air," she said. She said a woman followed, shouting, "My husband! My husband!" Gardner said she heard the woman say her husband was bipolar - a mental illness also known as manic-depression - and had not had his medication. The plane, Flight 924, had arrived from Medellin, Colombia, at 12:16 p.m. and was scheduled to leavet two hours later for Orlando, American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said. "I don't know yet if the passenger had been on the plane and was getting off, or was starting to board the aircraft," he said. The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m., suggesting the plane was getting ready to take off, he said. About 105 passengers scheduled to fly to Orlando, he said. Martin Gonzalez, spokesman for Colombia's civil aviation agency, said the flight "left normally with no problems." There were only 32 air marshals at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Bush administration hired thousands more afterward, but the exact number is classified.

  1. I think that the "Sky Marshall" overreacted. What I didn't find out, was just where was this guy shot at? In the back? Was he fleeing the plane? Outside the plane? Did he say that he had a bomb in his bag? Too many questions with no answers.

I know it's easy to justify the kill as an outsider, (I do it myself) but until one of your loved ones are killed (like mine was)one has no right to jump the gun. This guy was mentally fucked up.

You know I actually blame both him and his wife for trying to board a plane in the first place, and Reagan for shutting down the nut houses in the 80's.

Bottom line is that because of "911" American's "rights" have been trampeled upon, all in the name of "The War on Terror". The CIA itself as well as the 911 commission has stated that America is a "sitting duck" for another terrorist attack.

So I ask you all this: WHO really benefits from these "Terrorist attacks" ?Honestly... WHO? Does Al-Quieda? Or Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Blackwater, GEO Group, etc, etc.The list goes on and on.

  2. Imagine you lived in a country where the government pays reporters to write propaganda columns in support of government programs, without telling you that such payments exist.

Imagine you lived in a country that could invade your home, search it, and never have to tell you that such a search had occurred.

Imagine you lived in a country that could monitor your phone conversations without even having to ask a judge to issue a warrant.

Imagine a country that tortures people, even to death, in order to obtain confessions that they know are more likely than not to be false.

Imagine you lived in a country that could lock you up indefinitely, without charging you with a crime, because they claimed you were an enemy of the state.

    You do.

And all of these things have occurred in the past five years.

In the name of defending freedom, the Bush administration and the Republican Congress have made a mockery of our rights and liberties.

  4. Just think what would have happened if the individual who was unfortunately killed had actually had a bomb and the Air Marshal in question shot him in the leg. BOOM! Air Marshals, while skilled enough to make a shot like that, only have the option in that case to shoot to kill. I fear what would have happened if the Air Marshal took longer than the mere second it took to make a judgement call like that had NOT shot. Many more lives could have been lost.
We can not play any more games in this day and age.

  5. I agree. I think that being shot in the back is not a game.
