Our Dog Fez - Condemned To Die?

Just look at my baby... Back in August of this year our son Eric went to the Delaware County SPCA to buy a Dog for his brother Nicky for his birthday. He is a Chiwawa male about 3 to 4 years old I was told. He was found on the street in Ridley. At first when we got him home he was both scared and angry, as anyone would be in a new environment. Soon he seemed to accept our home and warm up to my wife Liz and our son Nick as well as our other son Fran. Myself on the other hand proved to be a challenge. Fez (His new name), watched me like a hawk and barked and actually nipped at my boots. This went on for several days until finally I squared off against him, Man to Dog. What did I do? I fed him and took him on an extended walk around our neighborhood. It worked. It's funny how one becomes so attached to an animal, but I did. He would greet me at the back door, and jump up and beg for some loving, (Or food, as dogs do.) Fez is now at the Veterinary Hospital, Four Paws on Springfield Rd in Springfield, PA. He was brought there by my Wife and I after being lethargic and not being able to take a you know what. Seems that after 300.00 I was told that he has a bladder stone or something and needs an operation. This operation will cost $900.00 to $1,200.00 dollars. I thought about it and tried to convince myself that he would be better off dead. But just looking at his picture on my cell phone and the fact that I indeed love this dog convinced me that he worth any amount of money within reason to live his life happy, healthy, and most of all PAIN FREE. Four or (IV) Paws is located at: 19 E Springfield Rd Springfield, PA 19064 Telco number is (610) 543-4350 Several of my friends say I am nuts to shell out that kind of money. I say that life is short, and the greedy get theirs in the end. P.S. Cheers. P.S. To you know who.. I know there is healthcare for pets. I lost our healthcare for my own children, (Make too much for CHIP ring a bell?) So how can I justify paying premiums for a dog? Tell you what. YOU pay for my kids and I'll pay for FEZ... DEAL? 1. have you checked around at other animal hospitals. I used to work at several local animal hospitals and that price seems a bit much. Especially if you've expressed that you can't afford a surgery that expensive. Some of the costs that they are adding may be unnessecary costs.

  2. We have a friend who works at another Vetrinary hospital nearby. My wife took Fez to Four Paws not remembering about our friend. Well it turns out that our friend told me that yes indeed $1,200.00 was a bit high. Tomorrow they operate, and when I pick him up on tuesday I hope that he's ok. That's the main thing. I will just have to pay it, although if its over 1,200.00 I will be annoyed to say the least.

  3. Hope all goes well.
I've had two cockers, one that was killed by a car and the one I have now,
    P J.
I'd go without food to do anything if
P J needed it. I might be called nuts too, but when you love a pet who cares what anyone thinks.
    All the best.

  4. Update: Fez was operated on this morning to remove multiple bladder stones. While the operation was sucessful, after he was being stitched up he flatlined. They did what they had to do, and brought him back. While he is in critical condition, he is responsive and seems to be ok according to my wife. He was transported to Plymouth Meeting to be held under observation overnight. We will see what tomorrow brings..

Say a prayer for him, it wouldn't hurt.

    Cheers.

  5. Thanks Bob.. I feel the same way.. The operation cost $845.00 and another $300.00 for x rays, CBC, etc.. I have yet to find out what the overnight stay at Plymouth Meeting will cost, suffice to say that "It's only Money", and we ALL have one life to live.

  6. Fez is alive and somewhat well as of 8:20 pm, Novemember 21st. He was picked up by myself and my wife this morning around 7:30 at Hickory Vet Hospital. Cost? $188.30. Was it worth it? You bet. Thanksgiving is all about the name. Giving thanks and giving. I am thankful for all the e mails concerning Fez and thank you all for your kind thoughts..

    Cheers.

  7. Fran,

My Cocker Spaniel snuck out the back door one night when my ex didn't shut it all the way. I was sitting on the couch watching tv when I heard the thud and then screams of my dog. It happened right in front of my house.

My ex ran out and picked her up and we rushed her down the Penn. He wanted to have her put to sleep (he was thinking money) and I wouldn't let him do it.

They saved my Pokey's life. She ended up having a steel plate put in and had to live in a playpen for months. She couldn't go to the bathroom unless we took her outside and supported her with a sheet.

She gave us many happy years after that and she finally had to be put down 2 years ago (old age and was suffering).

I wish you all the luck in the world with Fez and I hope he makes a complete recovery.

Hope you and the family have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  8. LOL PIT.. Catatologist? Fez is doing great, he is now on those expensive foords and I actually went to the Giant in Aldan and bought him diapers! While there a young mom was looking at my puzzled gaze at the assortment of diapers and offered her help. That's when I turned to her and said: " I need them for my Dog". She replied, "Sure you do".

Total cost for Fez? A lot.

    Was it worth it?

    Yeppers.

P.S. hope your Cat feels better and I need to send you an invite if your interested in posting here. I deleted some of the contributors one bad night.

  9. Well Fez is sick yet again.. I don't know what to do with him. He is running a fever and I put a cold compress on his forehead to keep him cool.
